Why is organic skincare even important?

Did you know that 70% of the products we put on our skin are actually absorbed into the body? That means that anytime we use products containing synthetic chemicals or fillers, we are basically consuming the product as if it were ingested. Organic means that the ingredients have been sourced and harvested in a manner that is better for the environment and free of pesticides, herbicides and genetically modified organisms that we would not want our children or loved ones to ingest. They are also free of petroleum waxes and other synthetic chemicals. Unfortunately, buying organic skincare is important not just to ensure that the ingredients are free from environmental toxins, but also because common skincare products currently on the market are chock full of synthetic chemicals and problematic ingredients. Next time you buy skincare, look for any ingredient with "paraben" in the body or "eth" or "fragrance." Walk the grocery store aisle and you are sure to turn one up within minutes! The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics recognizes that most of the skincare products on the market, the products we trust to be free of carcinogens and toxic ingredients, actually contain parabens, phthalates, dyes, carcinogenic derivatives, common allergens, and/or other compounds we would never want to eat or put in our bodies. Since the FDA does not regulate the skincare industry, the only way to ensure you do not put unhealthy ingredients on your body is to buy products that are CERTIFIED and VERIFIED by a third party to be natural and organic. Do not trust labels that have no third party verification. To learn more about safer skincare, visit the Skin Deep database or the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics website. Our products are currently certified under the stringent USDA organic program. They are never tested on animals and most of our products our vegan.

Do organic products really work?

Maybe you have heard the myth that organic or natural products don't work as well as non-organic skincare. The truth is that many of the organic products out there are actually better for you (free of harsh and harmful chemicals) and are also made of higher quality ingredients. You will find that many natural and organic products are as effective (in many cases, more effective) as some of the prescription skincare products recommended by doctors. Yet, organic skincare doesn't come with ill side effects. Calendula oil, found in our Cheeky Baby Butter®, has been instrumental in providing relief from eczema for dry skin sufferers for years. It is just one example of a natural way to combat common skin problems.

What are essential oils and why are they key ingredients in your products?

Plants are comprised of complex and powerful substances often referred to as essential oils. The term "oils" may be misleading since essential oils are actually highly concentrated liquids derived from an array of plants and herbs. BABYBEARSHOP® crafts its organic line of skincare products using only the highest quality certified organic essential oils. While the oils we use are known for their wonderful and pleasing fragrance, essential oils are even better known for their strong therapeutic and healing properties. Below, you will find a list of the key essential oils we carefully picked for use in our products and a description of each.

Are all of BABYBEARSHOP®s skincare products free of allergens?

We have worked diligently to eliminate the use of common allergens in our skincare products. You will find no wheat, soy, corn, nut or dairy derived ingredients here. We do not use ANY nut oils. We have tried to avoid the use of any oils or ingredients that are common irritants to children and adults. However, if you have a known allergy to lavender, chamomile, or mandarin oils, it is best not to use our products. While they have been selected due to their healing and calming properties, they may not be appropriate for a small percentage of consumers with specific allergies. Please review our labels to make sure you are not allergic to any of our ingredients before buying or trying.

Are essential oils safe for newborns?

All of our products are safe for the most sensitive of skin. However, newborns are lucky enough to have fresh and delicate skin that is for the most part, well balanced. It is often unnecessary to use baby lotions and moisturizers on babies younger than three months. If however, you feel the need to treat splotchy skin, cradle cap, or other skin irregularities, we suggest you speak with your pediatrician or naturopath before using any products on your newborn's brand new skin. Show your doctor our product page if you have any concerns about the right treatment. You will be hard pressed to find a purer blend of organic oils and natural butters than ours.

Can your products help clear eczema and itchy skin?

Our very first product, Cheeky Baby Butter™, was specifically developed by our founder to soothe an infant's painful, red, and chronically dry eczema. We cannot make any medical claims to treat or heal eczema, but our personal experience and customer testimonials speak for themselves. The calendula oil used in our Cheeky Baby Butter™ has been known to provide the most natural relief from eczema and chronic dry skin. If you or your loved one suffers from eczema or other skin irregularities, or simply has persistent dry and scaly skin, consider Cheeky Baby Butter® and our other skincare cleansers and moisturizers as a first natural defense against eczema. There is a reason our kids look forward to "Cheeky Time." Our adult friends swear by Cheeky too!

Please keep in mind that what we put in our bodies is just as important as what we put on them. If you are faced with the inconvenience and frustration that eczema and other skin problems can cause, take a look at your diet. Have you been tested for food allergies? Are you eating whole fruits and vegetables and trying to avoid fatty and high sugar content foods? We believe that the combination of safer skincare with a cleaner âœback to nature❠diet is the most effective way to combat skin ailments. That, and avoiding trigger foods that are not good for you.

What about psoriasis? Can your products help me with my psoriasis?

Psoriasis sufferers can also benefit from the same ingredients, such as calendula oil, that are found in our Cheeky Baby Butter™ and the calming chamomile and mandarin oils found in our Mama Belly Oil™ and Baby Bird Soap™. If you suffer from psoriasis, it is important to be gentle to your skin and keep it properly moisturized. Consider a warm soak using a capful of our Mama Belly Oil™ for relaxation and relief from itching and inflammation.

What is the big deal about parabens and phthalates?

Parabens are commonly found in a range of skincare and cosmetic products as a synthetic preservative. Research points to some potentially problematic health issues that may be associated with the use of parabens. Since what we put on our bodies often ends up in our bodies, it is especially important to avoid the use of skincare that relies on parabens as a preservative. Parabens can mimic the hormone estrogen, which is known to play a role in the development of breast cancer. Tokyo Metropolitan Research Laboratory of Public Health reported that exposure of newborn male mammals to butylparaben "adversely affects the secretion of testosterone and the function of the male reproductive system." The jury is still out on parabens, but current research does indicate there may be serious reasons for concern in the use of these synthetic preservatives that are abundant in the cosmetic industry. Why use a product containing parabens when you can opt to use the full line of BABYBEARSHOP skincare free of all parabens.
According to research by Health Child, Healthy World, phthalates are known to be probable carcinogens (according to EPA and WHO), suspected hormone disrupters, fetal development toxins, as well as reproductive toxins. They can be found in everything from fragrances to baby skincare, everyday cosmetics, shower curtains, and plastic toys. Our products do not contain ANY phthalates. Understanding which products contain this common ingredient can be very difficult and they are often not listed as an ingredient on your personal care labels. It is safe to suspect any cosmetic or personal care product containing a synthetic fragrance to contain phthalates.

Why doesn't your Wishy Wash™ Baby Wash create bath suds?

While most parents feel a sense of assurance from the suds that are created by many traditional baby bath products, the use of sodium laureth sulfate (SLS) is often used to create the frothy suds. However, these soapy suds are a false sense of assurance and SLS is known to be a common irritant for children and adults. We do not use any chemicals that create bath suds. The pure and organic oils in our Wishy Wash™ Baby Wash create a powerful, yet incredibly gentle and moisturizing cleanser for babies, children, and even adults. Let Wishy Wash™ reinvent your bath time!

How long will my organic skincare products from BABYBEARSHOP® last?

Since we only use natural preservatives in our soaps, oils, and butters, you can expect organic skincare to be most effective for approximately two years. Since you only need a teensy bit of our product when using on infants and children, you can expect one jar or container to last for at least three months (used daily in regular amounts) and up to nearly eight months for intermittent use. Please recycle and/or reuse your containers when you run out!

My Cheeky Baby Butter™ is thick. Is this normal?

Yes! We are actually on our second iteration of Cheeky Baby Butter™. Our newest version was specifically designed to be creamier than the first to meet the needs of our customers. However, since our products are truly natural and organic, please expect the butter to be a true balm with a slightly creamy texture. When stored in cooler temperatures, it will harden. With warmer temperatures, it becomes creamier. For the easiest application, scrape a teensy bit out in your palms, rub the balm between your hands to make it warm, and apply to affected skin areas. A little bit goes a long way.

I am not pregnant. Can I still benefit from the Mama Belly Oil™?

While we originally crafted our oil for pregnant moms, the lavender, chamomile and mandarin oils are incredibly moisturizing for all skin types and also have healing properties that may improve the skin's condition. Adults with chronically dry and scaly skin will love the non-greasy feel of our oil and the beautiful glow it creates. For bikini ready legs and all over moisture, try our Mama Belly Oil™ as part of your daily routine. It absorbs quickly so no greasy residue is left behind. We have customers who use it to relieve itching from chiggers, to relieve sunburns, and as their daily bath oil. When visiting Nordstrom Spa, remind your massage therapist to use BABYBEARSHOP organic oil if you have a strong aversion to synthetic fragrances and chemicals or have allergies to common skincare ingredients. Feel free to take your own bottle in for your next massage if your therapist doesn't carry our spa oil.
